  • Spanking Goals and Toe Pokes: Football Sayings Explained

TJ Martin, Gillian Bickley, Jacinta Read

Paperback (Proverse Hong Kong, June 5, 2008)
Football fans love to follow the media. But do they always understand the sayings famous pundits use? Spanking Goals & Toe Pokes by Tommy Martin Lists and explains more than 800 of the sayings that football commentators use. Is an enjoyable reference tool which can increase readers' understanding of: English language football commentaries. Colloquial English expressions in general. Spanking Goals and Toe Pokes: Football Sayings Explained gathers together 800 or so expressions, which have been used in English-language football commentaries over the past several decades. Football commentary is a specialized art and football commentators need a gift of expression to complement their love and knowledge of football itself. They use a rich language, colloquial and metaphorical. Listeners need to learn to understand this quickly if they wish to follow football closely. Football is now not only a world sport but the most popular sport in the world. One series of advertisements has claimed that it is a world language; a means of making friends without words. But football commentators do use words. And even non-native speakers of English enjoy or perhaps even prefer watching games when the commentary is given in English by knowledgable native speakers. To make it possible for football fans to enjoy the game and English language commentaries to the full, Tommy Martin's Spanking Goals and Toe Pokes: Football Sayings Explained lists expressions which commentators use many of them are colloquial or metaphorical and explains them in language that is more straightforward. Also included are some sayings used by footballers themselves. A basic football vocabulary is included and this will be found very useful, particularly for new admirers of the game. A note and diagram on the various positions where players play is also provided for additional reference. The print first edition contains an index of key words which makes it easy for fans to find the sayings in the book which they have heard and want to understand. In this Ebook edition, the print index is replaced by an index on a) football sayings and b) football vocabulary which allows readers to perform an interactive alpha search on the sayings and vocabulary. This feature currently works with some e-ink devices. A series of illustrations shows what each of a number of these metaphorical sayings seems to say, if we interpret them literally. Amusing and witty in themselves, these illustrations prove the need for the explanations that this book gives. Readers are welcome to submit more sayings to the publisher, Proverse Hong Kong. We may add your contribution to a new edition of this book. (Website: geocities.com/proversehk).
